ArcelorMittal South Africa
Sustainability Report for 2008
How we manage sustainability
A global policy to guide us
In order to live up to our brand promise of
"Transforming Tomorrow", we are committed to
the highest standards of corporate responsibility.
This is not only a matter of good corporate
citizenship; the ability to demonstrate good social
and community development practices makes us
an attractive partner and opens up new business
opportunities.
Recognising both the moral and business imperative
of corporate responsibility, the global ArcelorMittal
Group embarked on a process in 2008 to integrate
corporate responsibility into the mainstream
corporate decision-making process. We developed a
corporate responsibility strategy which is supported
at the highest level by the ArcelorMittal board of
directors and the Group Management Board. This
strategy outlines four broad commitments that
reflect the significance of corporate responsibility
within our core business strategy.
Investing in our people
Making steel more
sustainable
Enriching our communities
Making each and every person
working on our behalf feel
valued.
Our presence plays an
important role in all the
communities where we
operate.
This is all underpinned by transparent governance.
Using our expertise in steel to
develop cleaner processes and
greener products.
Ensuring good corporate governance
We are committed to ensuring the highest
standards of corporate governance and, as per
the recommendations made in King II, have a
unified board structure that retains full control
over the affairs of the company. Decisions on all
material matters are handled by the board which
is assisted in the discharge of its responsibilities
by various board committees. (For more
information, refer to the corporate governance
report in the ArcelorMittal South Africa 2008
annual report.)
